How Is a Facelift Performed?

A facelift is often performed under general anesthesia but can be performed under IV sedation and local anesthesia depending on the patient’s comfort level. Incisions will then be made behind the ear and within the hairline where scarring will be well-concealed. Through the incision, Dr. Ort will reposition and tighten the underlying tissue, gently smoothing out wrinkles and folds, and removing any excess skin.

Typically, a facelift procedure takes about 4-5 hours by itself but can be longer if combined with a brow lift, rhinoplasty, or a neck lift. The incisions will then be closed and bandaged. You will likely go home the same day after their surgery. If drains are placed, they are usually removed in a day or two. Sutures are removed at around 1 week after the surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Your overall good health matters more than your chronological age when determining to undergo a facelift. Most patients who opt for a facelift take 10 to 14 days off to recover while the bruising and swelling improve. After surgery, you can expect to take it easy and avoid heavy activity for 2 weeks. Social downtime can be longer, depending on the patient’s comfort level and degree of swelling. You’ll be prescribed medications to manage pain and swelling for the first few days, as well as antibiotics to help prevent infection.

Will I have scars after a facelift?
